Summit Public Schools, an NGLC grant recipient, is a charter management organization serving the Bay Area’s diverse communities. Summit operates six schools enrolling 1,600 students. Summit’s mission is to ensure that every student has the opportunity to not only attend, but succeed in, a four-year college or university. Summit is growing to serve 6,000 students through 14 schools.

Summit Public Schools offers a personalized approach to each individual student’s education. Every Summit student has a Personalized Learning Plan (PLP), where students set learning and personal growth goals, track progress, receive immediate feedback and are able to access learning resources at any time. The PLP is designed to be a dynamic tool where students, families and teachers alike can offer support and coaching. Additionally, students progress through a competency-based curriculum, with the orchestrated support of their teachers and mentors, to ensure that every student has the opportunity to possess the knowledge, skills, behaviors, mindsets, and experiences that lead to college and career readiness.

This personalized learning is possible due to an exceptional teaching faculty dedicated to self-directed learning as well as the technological tools that provide students, families, and teachers with immediate formative assessment feedback, multi-modal learning resources, and collaborative opportunities that were unavailable in the past. While technology has not driven Summit's innovations, it has accelerated our ability to drive towards our vision. In this webinar, the technological tools that we are using will be put within a framework for motivating learning for all students, and the products—some of which are developed in-house, some are paid products, and most are free, modular, and open to everyone—will be briefly demonstrated. Attendees will have the opportunity to indicate which products they would like to see in more depth.

Education Achievement Authority: Nolan Elementary-Middle School

Charged by the governor of Michigan to transform the lowest five percent of the persistently lowest achieving schools in the state while simultaneously developing a new approach to educating students, the Education Achievement Authority is recreating Nolan Elementary-Middle School in Detroit. Modular furniture and flexible grouping arrangements accommodate a blended learning, student-centered, mastery-progression approach. The dynamic learning platform emphasizes not just cognitive skills but also collaboration and communication.

Alpha Public Schools: Blanca Alvarado Middle School

Strong interpersonal relationships and character development are at the core of this San Jose, CA blended school’s model. Students learn a significant portion of core academic content online at their own level of mastery and pace and receive teacher-led instruction informed by real-time data from their online content. Unlike most middle schools, one teacher stays with a class of 34 students throughout the day and throughout the year.

Generation Schools Network: West Generation Academy

This Denver public 6-12 school operated by Generation Schools Network, which opened in Fall 2012, redesigned the academic model to a rotational blended model for greater personalization, more time for learning, and stronger support for academic and 21st century skills development. It also redeployed the school’s existing resources to change the model without adding to school costs and operating within key parameters of teacher contracts. The goal is to ensure that innovative practice and change occurs not just outside the system, but within it as well.

Touchstone Education: Merit Prep Newark

The model for this 6-12 charter school located in Newark, NJ hinges on six key values: achievement, innovation, excellence, teamwork, urgency, and integrity, and attempts to maximize the best of both technology and "offline" time with teachers and peers. Each day students log in to the Touchstone Scoreboard which shows their daily schedule of online content and which skills they need to conquer; they work from online playlists that teachers personalize for students. The model is explicitly designed to scale.
