This innovation brief from Next Generation Learning Challenges (NGLC) focuses on the blended, mastery-based professional development course developed by the Education Achievement Authority of Michigan for teachers in its student-centered learning schools. The goal is to provide the professional development that teachers need to leverage the student-centered learning environment in EAA schools in order to prepare K-12 students for college and career. An artifact includes screenshots of the teacher dashboard and professional development playlist that guides the professional learning experience in the Buzz learning platform.

Caliber: Beta Academy is reimagining education as we know it, with the belief that the innovations in its model will allow 100% of its students to graduate ready to attend and succeed in a competitive four-year college and beyond. The academic model is anchored by a focus on advanced mastery, relevance, and student ownership. This small, rural district intends to scale the model district-wide after phasing in the model at the middle school.

This small district south of Lexington, KY is completely redesigning its only middle school and high school by adopting a competency-based blended learning model. Personalized learning pathways directly link middle school, high school, and college curriculum. Projects play a central role in the new learning environment which aims to equip students with 21st century skills so they can seize their place in the Information Age as inventive learners.
